Complete Non-Surgical Facial Rejuvenation

Dr. Monheit was recently selected to participate in the fourth annual Iron Surgeon Competition by American Society of Dermatologic Surgery. Only two doctors were selected nationwide to compete. With only 2 months to pick a patient and rejuvenate her he had to act fast.  Using only lasers and injectables she has been brought back to a younger look. Dr. Monheit chose Dysport, Radiesse, Restylane, Juvederm and Fraxel laser for the contest.  Results were so good that Dr. Monheit has made this total facial non-surgical rejuvenation available to our patients who request such a service.

Dr. Appell takes time to educate students on how to take care of their skin

Dr. Appell was invited to speak to gifted/enrichment students at Cherokee Bend Elementary school in late October.  They had just begun their study of the skin and were eager to learn more about it from their favorite local Dermatologist.  Dr. Appell explained how she decided to become a Dermatologist, what a day is like in her office and her favorite/most challenging part of her job.   The students had been doing research on skin cancer so Dr. Appell brought in photos and explained how to discover a suspicious spot.  The session ended with question & answer time.  Dr Appell was amazed that all the kids knew the names of all 3 types of skin cancer. They also knew that these were related to the harmful effects of the sun as well as tanning beds!

Dr. Appell’s amazing results with Latisse

Dr. Appell started using Latisse when the Latisse representative started a contest at TS&B to see who could grow the best lashes.  She began using Latisse with only one drop to the base of both upper eyelids at bedtime.  It is applied in a fashion similar to eyeliner.   After about two months her eyelashes were thicker and darker.  After twelve weeks, she was amazed by what she saw.  Her new eyelashes looked like a strip of false eyelashes!  She loves having such long, thick dark lashes!  On the weekends, she will sometimes go without mascara, and not feel at all awkward about it.
Dr. Appell was never really bothered by her "old" lashes but she sure does love the new ones!!

What is MOHS Micrography Surgery?
Mohs micrographic surgery is a specialized, highly effective technique for the removal of skin cancer. The procedure was developed in the 1930s by Dr. Frederic Mohs at the University of Wisconsin and is now practiced throughout the world. Mohs surgery differs from other skin cancer treatments in that it permits the immediate and complete microscopic examination of the removed cancerous tissue, so that all “roots” and extensions of the cancer can be eliminated. Due to the methodical manner in which tissue is removed and examined, Mohs surgery has been recognized as the skin cancer treatment with the highest reported cure rate.
Advantages of the MOHS Surgical Procedure
Some skin cancers can be deceptively large – far more extensive under the skin than they appear to be from the     surface. These cancers may have “roots” in the skin, or along blood vessels, nerves, or cartilage. Skin cancers that  have recurred following previous treatment may send out extensions deep under the scar tissue that has formed at the site. Mohs surgery is specifically designed to remove these cancers by tracking and removing these cancerous “roots.” For this reason, prior to Mohs surgery it is impossible to predict precisely how much skin will have to be removed. The final surgical defect could be only slightly larger than the initial skin cancer, but occasionally the removal of the deep “roots” of a skin cancer results in a sizeable defect. The patient should bear in mind, however, that Mohs surgery removes only the cancerous tissue, while the normal tissue is spared.

Dr. Monheit's 3 week rule

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

The Skin Cancer Foundation has always recommended using a sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher as one important part of a complete sun protection regimen. Sunscreen alone is not enough, however. Read our full list of skin cancer prevention tips.
  • Seek the shade, especially between 10 A.M. and 4 P.M.
  • Do not burn.
  • Avoid tanning and UV tanning booths.
  • Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day.
  • Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body at least 20- 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours.
  • Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
  • Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months.
  • Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.
  • See your physician every year for a professional skin exam.
